After a night of unexpected heavy rain, we had ventured out to the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens, making the most of a cooler morning after a run of scorching summer days. While we ascended the rocky hill that leads us to a vantage point looking back out over our small town, light rain started to fall once again. Something about the rain falling seemed to bring my scope of attention closer in, a vignette effect of the outer margins being blurred, giving more attention to what was right before me. Suddenly I noticed hundreds of resurrection ferns creeping out through the rock crevices, moss-like green covering rocky surfaces, so much green everywhere - springing up through the hard ground. And this was after just one night’s worth of rain. My son couldn’t help but grab handfuls of damp, spongy dirt covered in the soft mossy green. I had just started working as an Arts Therapist and a few of my first clients were women referred from a local DV service. Sometimes in these therapeutic sessions I work with visual conversation cards, asking the person to select any cards that speak to how they feel about the situation they’re in. On one of these occasions, one of these women, who has experienced horrible acts of violence, chose an image of a woman holding onto a kite that was lifting her up into the sky. She talked about holding on to something that she didn’t necessarily have the words for, but something that buoyed her - even in the darkest of days. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62b027846198473d68682dfb/06f9b9e9-5edc-45e6-95d2-e833153e3d53/IMG_7396.jpg Blog - Resurrection Fern - Not long after my walk in the rain noticing the many resurrection ferns, I started writing a song that was about holding on – hold on to that kite. And before I’d even made the connection in my mind about the resurrection fern being an apt metaphor for resilience, I started to sing about them. There are ferns in the desert, after the rain, they come out again, in rocky terrain. Resurrection Fern is the first track of the reWILD EP that I recorded with Dave Crowe, in his Sing Hum studio. Not only did he capture the mood and textured layers I had hoped for the song, he elevated it with viola and violin, surging with the kite at the end of the track. Initially I had in mind that it would be the final track of the EP, a stripped back acoustic song to leave the listener with. In this digital age most people listen to tracks in a randomized order, often figured out by an algorithm, and I know this but… But when I went to upload the five tracks of the EP, I kept thinking about how I wanted to tell a story through the five tracks. And that story, I’ve come to realise, starts from a place of heartbreak. reWILD as an EP is a way for me to consider how we are navigating a changing climate and all the many layered things that come with that. The story, for me, starts with recognizing my fear, sadness, disappointment, and even rage that we have reached a point of such devastating inaction. I’ve come to realise that Colour My Sky is a balm for those times when I’m feeling stripped bare. It is an apt song for me to be singing right now when I’m feeling run down, depleted in reserves, and struggling to find a creative spark. Recently I’ve taught harmonies to the group of women I sing with. Sung with 12 or so women joining me, Colour My Sky starts with the chorus in three-part harmony with a friend playing accompanying percussion. Needless to say, the song has transformed through this collaboration. It’s uplifting and rejuvenating having a group of people join me - in sentiment, in song, in harmony, in rhythm, in attunement, in so many ways all at once. I cannot aptly sum up just how therapeutic it is. It definitely brought some colour back into my sky, ha! Sadly for the online listener, my solo version will have to suffice. Whether it be a big community pub choir coming together to belt out pop and rock songs or a small song circle gathering in people’s backyards to sing folksongs, there’s no denying the healing benefits of singing in groups. In recent times, there’s been reports of Russia “weaponizing winter” by targeting infrastructure to leave civilians without power and water as a freezing winter creeps in. Ukraine has shown resistance, its cities have been hit by relentless air strikes in recent times, but somehow their leaders, armed forces, and civilians have maintained solidarity. But the human cost has been enormous. Lives lost, injured, missing, displaced, not to mention other war atrocities we are still learning about. Aside from stormy skies on the first day, that kept things interesting on the otherwise straight and flat road from Alice Springs to Coober Pedy, my family and I were blessed to travel under a blue sky. A blue sky - peaceful, under no threat of attack to our safety. How blessed we are to do this, to sit around the table with loved ones at this festive time of year. Last night as I sat to begin to write this blogpost I decided to visit the UNHCR website and in doing so discovered that Australian band The Bluesberries just released a song Blue Skies – a collaboration between Australian and Ukrainian musicians, with money raised aiding Ukrainian refugees. The air lethargic, I’ve had encounters with friends, colleagues, strangers, their eyes stunned like rabbits in headlights sighing comments like oh is it that time of the year, already? Oh no, but I still have so much to do and I’m so terribly tired. I have been feeling like there’s an unflinching parade of juggling pins being thrown at me and I don’t have the clarity of mind to have any foresight with what to do with them. But I catch them, one by one. I action them, respond to them, even if it means putting them in the in-tray to deal with later. Just in time to catch the next one. Right now, with heavy bones and a drowsy mind, all I can do is keep my head above water. Tread water and wait for the tide to turn. I do what I can to inhale a sense of buoyancy. The movement of walking creates a rhythm upon which I play with vocal sounds. Sometimes words find their way into this playful dance of movement and sound. It’s an embodied opening to words rather than a cerebral construction of lyrics. And it is not until later, if any words stick, that I will take the time to think about what these words mean. It often feels like this world is racing ahead of us, faster than we can keep up with. Yet somehow in this rapid unfolding, we need to hold on to a sense of self-agency, of choice, of responsibility, of the part that we play in the larger whole. Twelve, thirteen remains unseen. The future that we play a part in making. There are those that shrug their shoulders and say let’s just enjoy what we have on offer today, downplaying or hiding from any consequences for the future. Something along the lines of Twelve, thirteen let’s rise again and heal. Leaving something up in the air is against all my therapeutic arts and social worker training – it’s been drilled in to me to always leave people feeling resolved or contained moving forward. Art and music doesn’t always do this. More often than not it questions, stirs things up, gets under your skin, turns your world upside down. And leaves you deciding how to make sense of some new knowing as you move forward. I remember being surrounded by soft shades of green, a refreshing change to the arid palette of the desert. Leaves glistened with dewdrops and I kept stopping to take a closer look at spider webs glittering with beads of watery light. And the snails. Oh the snails! Once I saw them, hundreds of them dotted along the trail and dancing among the sea of droplets, I could not unsee them. What was it about these slow-moving, shelled creatures that made me feel so light and at ease? Still today I cannot remember the details of where I camped or even what landmarks I saw on that walk that morning.
